Library charges

Public libraries are free to join.  Members can borrow books for free, but may be charged to rent additional items such as CDs and DVDs.  Returning items late can result in a library fine.  If you accumulate a large fine, you may be barred from using the library until this is paid off.

Sometimes it works out cheaper to incur a fine rather than renew an item that you have to pay for.  For example, if you are unable to return a CD or DVD until 2 days after its due date, it may be cheaper to be charged a fine for late return rather than pay to renew the item for another week.
